What is an Under-deck?
An under-deck is the area located beneath a deck or balcony, typically used for storage or as extra usable space and entertaining guests. This space can be designed to improve the visual appeal of outdoor environments or fulfill practical needs, such as accommodating utilities offering protection from the elements. Undercover system can be completed with different materials to achieve a refined appearance while optimizing functionality. How does it work?
-
Installation: The system is installed on the underside of the deck, typically attached to the deck joists.
-
Water Diversion: Rainwater that falls through the deck boards is caught by the interlocking panels of the underdeck system.
-
Drainage: The panels are sloped to direct water to a hidden gutter system, which then channels it away from the foundation to the home's existing drainage.
-
Finished Look: The panels create a smooth, finished ceiling, concealing the joists and providing a polished aesthetic.

What To Expect For Installation
During your under-deck system installation, expect your PremierUNDERDECK workers to first assess and prepare the site, then build a support frame with a slight pitch for drainage. The installation will be completed with the attachment of ceiling panels, gutters, and any desired optional accessories. A full installation typically takes one to two workdays.
Preparation and planning
-
Initial assessment: Before installation, the crew will inspect the area to note the deck's size and structure, the spacing of the joists, and the best location for drainage. You may need to clear the space of furniture and other items beforehand.
-
Calculating the slope: A crucial step is establishing the pitch for water runoff. The crew will use a laser level or string line to plan a slope of about 1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot, directing water away from your house toward the new gutter system.
-
Material readiness: If you are having a Trex RainEscape system installed in an area with fluctuating temperatures, the trough material will be unrolled and laid flat to acclimate before installation.
Construction
-
Mounting the supports: The installation crew will attach a framework of ledger boards and support brackets to the underside of your deck joists. This frame is what the panels will rest on.
-
Flashing and sealing: At the junction where the system meets your house, flashing will be installed and sealed with waterproof caulk to prevent any water from getting behind the system.
-
Installing panels: The waterproof ceiling panels, often made of aluminum or fiberglass, are then installed one by one, with each panel interlocking or overlapping with the next to ensure a watertight seal. The panels will be cut to the exact length needed.
-
Attaching gutters and downspouts: The water from the panels will be directed into a gutter system that is installed along the outer edges of the underdeck. Downspouts are connected to the gutters to carry the water away from the house's foundation.
-
Adding accessories: If you opted for add-ons like a ceiling fan, speakers, or lighting, the crew will install them as the panels go in.
Cleanup and inspection
-
Site cleanup: The installers will clean up the work area once the panels are all in place.
-
Quality inspection: Before final payment, the installers will conduct a final inspection to make sure the system is properly sealed and installed correctly.
-
Water test: The installers may do a water test by running a hose over the deck to confirm that water is being captured and routed into the gutters as it should be.
-
Enjoy your space: With the installation complete, you can begin enjoying your new dry, usable outdoor space
